Someone to Keep Our Children Safe

I conceived of this piece, "Someone to Keep Our Children Safe," with a broken heart while mourning all the beautiful lives lost during the Uvalde school shooting. During the news coverage, I saw funerals with little white crosses decorated with colorful flowers for the deceased children. I integrated this imagery into my painting.

I imagined a loving and peaceful mother figure who could hold all the babies in her arms and keep them safe. I felt that - as a mother and human being - I/we let these children down, especially after reading transcripts of their pleas for help.

My heart continues to break for everyone affected by the shooting and gun violence in this country and throughout the world. I wish that I could have kept you safe that day Makenna Lee Elrod, Layla Salazar, Maranda Mathis, Nevaeh Bravo, Jose Manuel Flores Jr., Xavier Lopez, Tess Marie Mata, Rojelio Torres, Eliahna "Ellie" Amyah Garcia, Eliahna A.
